JOSÉ JIMENEZ ARANDA (1837-1903), THE BIRD FANCIER, OIL ON PANEL, SIGNED, LOCATED AND DATED

Painter of scenes from everyday life, José Jimenez Aranda (1837-1903) possessed a talent for keen observation, capturing vivid images in a highly realistic vein. He lived in Paris for nine years and won several major prizes in France, including a gold medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition for his painting of a visit to the hospital by the chief physician (Prado Museum, Madrid, inv. P007342).The present composition is a good example of his acute style, with its naturalistic details, such as the rolled-up paper tucked into the birdcage stating in old Catalan “Birds are for sale at the barber's opposite”.

Peintre des scènes de la vie quotidienne, José Jimenez Aranda (1837-1903) possédait un talent d’observateur affuté pour capter des images vives dans une veine très réaliste. Demeuré neuf ans à Paris, il s’était distingué par différents prix d’importance en France et notamment en obtenant la médaille d’or à l’Exposition universelle de 1889 pour son tableau représentant une visite du médecin en chef à l’hôpital (musée du Prado, Madrid, inv. P007342).
La présente composition illustre bien son style aiguisé avec des détails naturalistes comme ce papier enroulé à la cage d’oiseaux précisant dans un patois de catalan 'Les oiseaux sont à vendre chez le barbier d’en face'.
