FURTHER DETAILS
ANTONIETTA BRANDEIS (1848 OR 1849-1926), VIEW OF VENICE: THE PALAZZO DUCALE, THE PIAZZETTA SAN MARCO AND THE BASILICA SANTA MARIA DELLA SALUTE FROM THE RIVA DEGLI SCHIAVONI, OIL ON BOARD, SIGNED, BEARS A STAMP (ON THE REVERSE)

The Czech-born painter Antonietta Brandeis (1848 or 1849-1926) belongs to the long tradition of Italian vedute painters. Trained at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, she travelled throughout Italy, documenting the landscapes and monuments that punctuated the traditional Grand Tour of young Europeans. Her paintings, characterised by their small size, are veritable postcards of everyday life in Venice, Rome and Florence, as in View of Florence: The Ponte alle Grazzie on the Arno from the Uffizi (lot 215), where the composition is enlivened by the inclusion of a mother and child brandishing a hoop. She also used this motif in the View of Rome: The Piazza del Popolo seen from the obelisk of Heliopolis (lot 214).
