MARTÍN RICO Y ORTEGA (1833-1908), A VENETIAN GARDEN, OIL ON PANEL, SIGNED

This small scene is bathed in the warm light of Venice, a city that Martin Rico y Ortega (1833-1908) discovered for the first time in 1873. It was then that Rico's style, already influenced by the painters of the Barbizon school and the vivid works of his great friend Marià Fortuny (1838-1874), reached its full maturity. Following in the footsteps of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters such as Manet (1832-1883), Monet (1840-1926) and Sargent (1856-1925), as well as the great Venetian painters of the eighteenth century, such as Canaletto (1697-1768), Rico enjoyed painting en plein air, often aboard a gondola. This method enabled him to capture more intimate scenes of the Serenissima, as witnessed by the present painting.
