Sale Overview

---

Dreamy landscapes, whimsical compositions and fantastical world, these terms are often used — and sometimes abused — to qualify Marc Chagall’s colourful compositions. Yet this stereotype approach to examining his oeuvre omits a critical aspect of his work, that of reality. Indeed, as one delves into his artworks and goes beyond the superficial appearance of a dreamscape, one discovers that Chagall’s creations are undoubtedly rooted in reality. His work moves between the sky — the realm of space painted by imagination — and the earth — the realm of tangibility. This foundation in reality does not limit the artist’s visual vocabulary. On the contrary, Chagall uses the scenes constructed with his imagination to anchor the real life events, from personal experiences to contemporary events, he set out to portray. All this is evident in the 72 drawings and prints by Chagall, formerly from the artist’s estate, offered in this auction.
