At the Salon of 1812, the Neoclassical artist Pierre Peyron presented two paintings, depicting Hippocrates visiting Democritus and The School of Pythagoras (nos. 713 and 714). Both are lost, but known from engravings by Louise-Charlotte Soyer, published by Landon in Salon de 1812, pls. 17, 31 (P. Rosenberg and P. Van der Sant, Pierre Peyron 1744-1814, Paris, 1983, nos. 173-175, ill.). The present drawing is a study for the second of these works. A study for its pendant in the same technique and of the same dimensions is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rouen (inv. 868-5-18; see op. cit., no. 174, ill.).
