Lot Essay

At the Salon of 1812, the Neoclassical artist Pierre Peyron presented two paintings, depicting and (nos. 713 and 714). Both are lost, but known from engravings by Louise-Charlotte Soyer, published by Landon in , pls. 17, 31 (P. Rosenberg and P. Van der Sant, , Paris, 1983, nos. 173-175, ill.). The present drawing is a study for the second of these works. A study for its pendant in the same technique and of the same dimensions is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rouen (inv. 868-5-18; see , no. 174, ill.).
