The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. There is a canvas join that runs horizontally across the centre of the canvas. Examination in natural light shows some minor losses and associated restoration along this canvas join. There is scattered retouching throughout, most extensively in the darker passages of the sky. In the upper right corner some minor historic losses have also been retouched. There is a small patch of wear in the bottom left hand corner with minor associated paint losses. There is a minor loss to the water in the lower right-hand corner. The upper paint glazes have thinned somewhat. To the edge of the canvas frame abrasions can be seen. There is an old, yellowed varnish. Examination under UV light confirms all the aforementioned retouchings is and restorations. Despite this, the fluidity of execution is appreciable, capturing the sense of movement in the composition.
