The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This single-piece oak panel is bevelled at the edges, which has thin pieces of wood glued along its edges. The horizontal crack of approximately 7 cm in the upper right corner, visible in the illustration, appears to be associated with the original panel splitting from the later partially painted addition along the top of the panel, visible on the reverse running across the length of the top of the panel. Ultraviolet examination reveals a thick layer of obscuring varnish, with some historic restoration to surface abrasion visible particularly in the sky in the upper left, as well as scattered restoration in the trees and along the edges associated with frame wear. The thick layer of obscuring varnish precludes further investigation of the canvas.
