Both panels are constructed of three vertical planks with wooden buttons on the reverse associated to the panel joins. The panels have both very slighlty warped.
Portrait of a gentleman: The varnish is a little cloudy and uneven and some discoloured retouching to the blacks of the costume is visible to the naked eye. There is some rubbing along the edges of the panel associated to frame abrasion. Examination under ultra violet light reveals fine infilling to the flesh tones and hair with some scattered retouching in the darker tones of the costume and background.
Portrait of a lady: The cloudy varnish is a little uneven and there are some surface scratches with associated losses at the upper edge of the panel. The artist’s technique of employing the end of his brush to pick out the detail in the embroidery remains fully appreciable and the highest impasto in details such as the bow are remarkably well preserved. Examination under ultra violet light reveals some infilling associated to the panel grain in the flesh tones, the panel joins, and some of the darker tones, with a small area of strengthening in the costume.
