ALESSANDRO SALUCCI (FLORENCE 1590-1655/60 ROME) and POSSIBLY JAN MIEL (BREVEN-WAES, NEAR ANTWERP 1599-1664 TURIN)
An capriccio with an ionic portico, a fountain, a two story loggia, a Gothic palace, and figures on a quay
The present view painting is typical of the collaborative efforts of artists converging in Rome in the 17th century. Alessandro Salucci, Viviano Codazzi, among other vedutisti, along with the members of the bambocciante, figure painters from the North, produced fantastical capricci for the open market. Salucci drew from a broad set of influences, including Claude Lorraine’s classical marine scenes, illusionistic quadrature, as well as the ruins and contemporary architecture of Rome.

This large canvas is supported on the reverse by a glue lining. There is some evidence of cusping along the upper edge, and some tenting over the upper right corner. The paint layer is stable and exhibits an uneven craquelure. The varnish has become slightly cloudy and yellowed with age. In natural light, scattered restorations to the sky, areas of the architecture, and to the seated donkey rider at lower center are visible. Frame abrasions and associated repairs are visible along the lower edge and are not covered by the rabbet of the current frame. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals strengthening to the architectural elements at the top of the temple at left, in the dark areas of shadow at far left, scattered in the figures, and to the sculpture and plinth in shadow at far right. This large painting presents well, and is offered in an elegantly carved and giltwood frame.
