CIRCLE OF LUCAS GASSEL (HELMOND C. 1495-1570 BRUSSELS)
Though previously attributed to Lucas Gassel, this painting is now thought to be by a contemporary active in the third quarter of the sixteenth century. Edwin Buijsen was the first to associate it and a panel of nearly identical size (Museum Helmond, Helmond) with two panels of similar scale depicting Abraham and the three angels (formerly Gosschalk collection, Wassenaer) and Landscape with the scenes from the life of Samson (sold Christie's, Amsterdam, 20-21 November 2013, lot 75), all of which must have originated in the same workshop. To this group, Anna Koopstra added a somewhat smaller panel measuring 36 x 58 cm. formerly in the Freling collection, Amsterdam (loc. cit.), and, more recently, an Extensive landscape with a town along a river and Samson and the lion in the foreground (sold Christie's, New York, 23 April 2021, lot 6).

This painting is executed on a panel comprised of three horizontally oriented boards, which has been supported on the reverse by a cradle. The panel joins, as well as later restorations to the joins, are visible in raking light. From top to bottom the boards measure approximately 6 inches, 12 inches, and 10 1/4 inches in height. There are a few horizontal cracks, visible in the catalog image: one emanating from center left edge through the architecture measures 9 1/2 inches, another from the lower left corner through the foliage measures 23 1/4 inches, a third beginning at the upper right in sky measures 11 1/4 inches. A few smaller cracks are visible at the extreme edges. These cracks have been stabilized by the cradle and any associated losses have been retouched. The paint layers is stable under a clear varnish. There is an uneven craquelure across the surface. Repairs to the thin glazes in the sky and along the aforementioned panel joins and cracks are visible in natural light. There is some frame abrasion at the extreme edges, which is hidden by the rabbet of the frame. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed further restorations to the background, specifically in the foliage and architecture at left, to the figure of Job, and to small losses in the clothing of the figures surrounding Job. The painting presents well overall and can be displayed in its current state. The work is offered in a wooden Dutch-style frame.
