Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on a panel, comprised of two vertically oriented boards. The panel is uniformly thin and shows some evidence of beveling on the reverse which has been covered in a waxy substance. A slight convex bow has developed with age. There is evidence of old wood worm channels on the reverse, which are now inactive. The panel join has moved with age and the boards have become slightly misaligned, as seen in the trees and in the Virgin's hair. Repairs along the join, especially in the Virgin's red garment are visible in raking light.
The paint layer is stable under an uneven, and slightly dirty varnish. Further repairs in the flesh tones and the light colors of the background have discolored slightly with age. There is a 2 inch area of damage just above the foliage at center, as seen in the catalogue image. Restorations throughout the Virgin's red cloak ant to the sky at upper left are visible in raking light. A loss in the village at center left is visible in raking light, and has been well restored. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed an extensive campaign of restoration to the Virgin's clothing. Additional restorations scattered throughout were revealed. Further inspection under ultraviolet light was hindered by an uneven and opaque varnish. The painting is offered in a painted and giltwood frame.
