The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
We are grateful to Kirsten Younger Paintings Restoration for the following condition report (24 March 2022).
The painting is in very good condition overall. The panel has a slight warp and it is in stable condition. An old fine crack extends in from the left side along the bottom of the bunch of red grapes on the table and it is reinforced on the back with six small squares of wood. The back of the panel is coated with an original layer of painted gesso and it is mostly intact except where it has been thinned along the crack and a small area at the upper right. The basket, the grapes and the pomegranates are in excellent condition. The fine details including the insects and the drops of water on the table are also in very good condition. There is a small restored area under the thick varnish in the background near the top right above the grape leaf and some retouching on the cloth between the sections of pomegranate, and small touches along the fine crack. There are some recent small retouches in the background at the right side and along the bottom edge near the left corner. The varnish has a dark opaque fluorescence in UV light and appears to be somewhat discolored and the surface gloss is even.
