A winter landscape with figures on a village road

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The canvas is supported on the reverse with a glue lining. The varnish is glossy and yellowed in places and some of the original impasto is still evident the clouds. The paint layer is lifting in two places: in an approximately ¹⁄₂ x ¹⁄₂ in. area in the sky at center; and in an approximately ¹⁄₂ x ¹⁄₂ in. area in the sky and roof of the building closest to the picture plane. Under natural light, a fine craquelure is visible across the painting. The paint is thinning in places, primarily in the sky. Inpainting is visible along the extreme edges of the canvas and presumably corresponds with areas of scuffing due to frame contact. Under ultraviolet light, inpainting fluoresces along the extreme canvas edges, as well as here and there in the landscape and in the sky, most notably in an area of approximately 2¹⁄₂ x 5 in. at upper center, and in an area of approximately 1 x 2 in. in the sky below the longest horizontal branch at left. The picture would benefit from stabilization of the lifting paint.
