The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is reinforced on the reverse with a glue lining. A fine craquelure is visible in natural light. The varnish is somewhat cloudy, yellowed and unevenly applied and the paint stable on the support. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a campaign of restoration to the blues in the sky at upper right, partially to address a restored hole measuring approximately ½ inch in diameter, with further passages of retouching generally measuring approximately 1 inch in diameter or less in the figures. Additional areas of strengthening to reinforce contours and details fluoresce in the Baptist’s hair, around the banderole at lower right and in the drapery. The painting presents well and can be hung in its current state.
