Francesco Petrucci dates this self-portrait to circa 1685, when the artist was 30 years old (loc. cit.). In doing so, he places it chronologically between the first likeness captured by the artist of himself in 1675 (Florence, Uffizi Gallery) and his portait as an older man, attributed to Pier Leone Ghezzi (Rome, Accademia di San Luca), both of which exhibit a strikingly similar physiognomy in the size and shape of the eyes and mouth, the cleft of the chin and the upward turn of the nose. Passeri has portrayed himself in the black coat and white collar of the artist at work. Post Lot Text Please refer to the storage and collection terms as set out in the terms and conditions.

A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is supported on the reverse with a glue lining. There is an approximately 2 x 2 in. fabric patch adhered to the reverse at center left. The varnish is clear, though yellowed, and the picture appears not to have been cleaned for some time. The paint layer is stable on the support. Under natural light, a fine craquelure is visible. The paint layer is also a little abraded in places. Touches of discolored inpainting are visible in the sitter and in the background. Some scuffing due to frame contact is visible along parts of the extreme edges of the canvas. Under ultraviolet light, the varnish fluoresces unevenly and scattered areas of inpainting fluoresce throughout. The picture could be displayed as is but may benefit from a sensitive cleaning.
