Lot Essay

This unpublished panel is a fine addition to the corpus of works by Jacopo del Sellaio. From the late 1470s until his death Sellaio, whose name was given to him because his father was a saddler, was one of the most productive Florentine painters of his generation. He was strongly influenced by Fra Filippo Lippi early in his career and later, and in his maturity, by Botticelli and Domenico Ghirlandaio, as can be seen in the lot offered here.
We are grateful to Chris Daly for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs and noting that the panel most likely dates to the later part of his career, and is close in style to the Crucifixion, painted circa 1490-93, which was made for the Compagnia di San Frediano (now Florence, San Frediano in Cestello).
