This unpublished panel is a fine addition to the corpus of works by Jacopo del Sellaio. From the late 1470s until his death Sellaio, whose name was given to him because his father was a saddler, was one of the most productive Florentine painters of his generation. He was strongly influenced by Fra Filippo Lippi early in his career and later, and in his maturity, by Botticelli and Domenico Ghirlandaio, as can be seen in the lot offered here. We are grateful to Chris Daly for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs and noting that the panel most likely dates to the later part of his career, and is close in style to the Crucifixion, painted circa 1490-93, which was made for the Compagnia di San Frediano (now Florence, San Frediano in Cestello).

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is supported on the reverse by three horizontal batons. It appears to have been planed in the past, and there is evidence of historic woodworm. There are various repaired vertical splits and cracks, the most prominent of which are either side of Christ’s head. There are a few discoloured old repairs, for example to his ear and left cheek, and old wormholes have been filled. There are losses around all the edges - please refer to the new illustration (without the facing paper). The varnish is rather thick and discoloured, and seems to have been cleaned in some areas. The examination under UV light shows some scattered retouching but a more thorough reading is impeded by the varnish.
