The sculture serving as a model in this scene of a drawing lesson is the famous Mercury attaching his sandals by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle (1714-1785). A much larger bronze cast of the sculpture at the Louvre is dated 1753. If Chardin painted the scene in 1749, it must be an earlier version depicted here.
