CIRCLE OF ELIAS VAN DEN BROECK (ANTWERP 1649-1708 AMSTERDAM)
A forest floor scene in autumn with a bird's nest, snakes and butterflies
This painting is a period copy on a somewhat smaller scale of a painting by Elias van den Broeck, which was recently given to Otto Marseus van Schrieck (sold Hampel Auctions, Munich, 2 July 2020, lot 720) but is in fact the work of van den Broeck.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is executed on a panel comprised of a single board with a vertical grain. The panel is bowing very slightly. There is a very fine hairline crack extending from the upper edge at center. The paint layer is stable under a clear varnish that has slightly yellowed with age. There is a network of unobtrusive craquelure following the grain of the wood. Under natural light, scattered retouched to an area of the tree trunk in the background, around the butterfly at upper center, and two small areas to the rocky foreground are visible. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restorations and further minor scattered retouchings. The work should be hung in its present state. It is offered with a simple carved painted frame.
