The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is supported on the reverse with a glue lining. The paint layer is stable, although slightly dirty under a varnish that has yellowed with age. There is an overall network of craquelure. There is a fine curving scratch below the sitter and extending approximately 5 inches across her skirt. Under natural light, restoration to address earlier frame abrasion and disturbances along the stretcher bar is evident. Further scattered areas of restoration are visible, including to an area in the trees at upper center through which the sky is seen, and feathered strokes of inpainting to minimize craquelure. The canvas supported on the reverse with two patches to address short repaired tears. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned retouching, and further restoration to the dark background surrounding the sitter at left. The painting can be hung in its present state, but its appearance would likely be enhanced following a sensitive conservation treatment. The work is offered in a carved gilt wood frame.
