Lot Essay

At least two further versions of this composition, though with slight differences in detail, by Frans Francken II are known. A signed example on copper is today in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Brunswick, while a second, unsigned panel was formerly in the Jäger collection, Vienna (see U. Härting, Frans Francken der Jüngere (1581-1642): die Gemälde mit kritischem Oeuvrekatalog, II, Freren, 1989, p. 333, nos. 320 and 321).
