This painting repeats Matteo di Giovanni's composition for a painting in the Museo d'Arte Sacra, Buonconvento. Its condition makes it difficult to discern its age for certain; it is likely late nineteenth or early twentieth century, though the possibility of there being a period painting beneath the restoration cannot be excluded.
We are grateful to Christopher Daly for noting this lot's relationship to the Buonconvento painting.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is made up of three vertical boards and is stable with the lefthand panel join reinforced by three butterfly joins. The paint surface is a little dirty with some losses as visible in the catalogue image, most notable in the Virgin's drapery, the index finger of her proper left hand and in the neck of the angel at left. Some of these areas are lifting a little. There is old retouching and repaint in oil in the face, neck and wrist of the Virgin and chest of the Child which has discolored slightly and is now visible to the naked eye. Inspection under UV reveals extensive retouching throughout, including to the face of the Virgin, with overpaint to the face of the lefthand angel and the body and limbs of the Child. Offered in an elaborate Renaissance style tabernacle frame.
