The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The painting has a glue lining and is very firmly stretched. Areas of old retouching have discolored over time, becoming more apparent to the naked eye, most notably in the forehead and ruff. The paint surface is somewhat abraded in the darks and the hair, beard and ruff appear to have been broadly strengthened and the background possibly overpainted.

Inspection under UV is impeded by the opaque varnish which fluoresces green but reveals aforementioned discolored retouching in the face and further retouching in the cheek and nose.
