The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is supported with a glue lining and the paint is stable. Under natural light, the varnish is clear and a craquelure is visible in places. Abrasion to the paint surface reveals canvas weave in some places, such as below the violin’s neck and on the egg at right. Discolored retouches are visible over the skull, including a vertical line running to its upper center. Scattered discolored retouches are visible in the background. Under ultraviolet light, scattered strengthening is visible over the curtain, the violin, and here and there throughout the painting. A 3 inch area fluoresces under the book at lower center. The painting could be displayed as is, but restoration could also improve its appearance.
