Marianne Loir was the daughter of the goldsmith Alexis II Loir and granddaughter of the history painter and engraver Nicolas-Pierre Loir. She studied under both Hubert Drouais and Jean François de Troy, the latter of whom was director of the French Academy in Rome, where she was resident between 1738 and 1746. Loir may have found it difficult to compete for portrait commissions in Paris and is recorded as a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Marseille in 1762. Her delicately rendered portraits with refined color schemes found particular appeal among the French nobility and intellectual elite.

The painting present very well and is ready to hang in its present state. The canvas has an old glue lining and is firmly stretched. The paint surface is clean beneath a clear varnish with some old, now slightly discolored retouching visible in the upper sky, though this is not distracting.
Inspection under UV reveals an old restored tear or hole in the sky above the sitter’s head, another in the background at right extending through the barrel of the gun and a further restored hole in the upper right corner. There is further, minor retouching along the barrel of the gun, scattered in the background and here and there in the face of the figure but this has been very finely applied.
The painting requires no further intervention and is offered in a decoratively carved gilt wood frame.
