    Specialist Notes:

    George Hurrell was brought to MGM at the insistence of the actress Norma Shearer and quickly transformed Hollywood photography. Using an easily moveable boom light he illuminated his subject’s cheekbones and created shadows under their nose and eyes. His inventive use of strong contrasts of black and white gave his subjects a sculptural quality which came to define an era. His radical retouching of negatives gave his female subjects – particularly Joan Crawford - an unprecedented glow and saw them reach their peak of sexual allure in front of his camera.
