“Colours, like features, follow the changes of the emotions” –Pablo Picasso
The present lot demonstrate the artist’s exploration of the boundaries between two and three dimensions, displaying his mastery of colour, which he uses to articulate his subjects and bring his works to life. Picasso cleverly uses the shape of large local traditional pitchers to represent faces and heads, the rounded body and fine spout and handle reminiscent of Etruscan examples. The all over design remains in keeping with this classical reference but brings a Modern twist to this history, making it typically ‘Picasso’ in being both reverent and revolutionary at the same time. The spontaneous, bold brushstrokes are the very same we see on his large multi-coloured portraits of musketeers which occupied him during 1969, the same year in which these two pitchers were created. Picasso and his wife Jacqueline had been living for most of the 1960s in the secluded farmhouse Notre Dame de Vie, near Mougin and Picasso often worked from there stopping by the Madoura pottery to check up on things and take away some partially fired pots or tiles to decorate.
