Sale Overview
Our September auction of Prints and Multiples in London focuses on prints by some of the great Modern and Post War artists of the 20th century.
Highlights include Pablo Picasso’s striking portrait of his second wife Jacqueline Roque, Buste de femme au chapeau, 1962, rendered in a vivid palate of red, yellow and blue, and an acknowledged masterpiece of the linocut medium and Edvard Munch’s haunting woodcut Moonlight II, 1902. These are just some of modern prints of interest, which include important prints by Max Beckmann, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, and others. From a private German collection comes a group of rare prints and portfolios from the 1910s and 1920s, many in the spirit of biting social commentary, by Otto Dix, Oskar Fischer, Otto Freundlich, George Grosz, Heinrich Hörle and Johannes Molzahn.
A fine group of prints by David Hockney features flower themed works including Amaryllis in a Vase, 1985, and Lilies, 1970-71, two early etchings from 1961 Three Kings and a Queen, and Alka Seltzer, formerly in the collection of R. B. Kitaj, and the monumental inkjet print Autour de la Maison, été , 2019, made during the artist’s recent sojourn in Normandy.
Highlights of Pop Art include a complete set of Andy Warhol’s Muhammad Ali, 1978, in exceptionally fine condition, four images from the Mick Jaggerseries, 1975, a Queen Elizabeth (Royal Edition Purple), 1985, Keith Haring’s playful homage to the King of Pop Art, Andy Mouse (one plate) , 1986, and a complete set of Richard Hamilton’s James Joyce’s Ulysses, 1984-85.
