Sale Overview
Our September online Prints & Multiples sale focuses on editions by leading 19th and 20th century masters.
We are delighted to be offering a Corporate Collection led by four screenprints by Andy Warhol from his iconic Myths series, including Superman, The Witch, The Star, and The Shadow in which the artist casts himself as the mysterious comic superhero. This collection has a particularly strong representation of Post-War American prints, including Pop Art by Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg and David Hockney, and Abstract Expressionism by Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler and Brice Marden.
Another highlight is Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s rare lithographic masterpiece La Grande Loge, from an Important Private European Collection, described by Götz Adriani as among the finest works Lautrec ever produced. Depicting Madame Armande Brazier, proprietress of Au Hanneton, a popular lesbian bar in the Rue Pigalle, and the dancer Émilienne d’Alençon, it gives a fascinating glimpse into the queer subculture of fin-de-siècle Paris.
Great Britain’s important contribution to 20th Century printmaking is eloquently demonstrated by works such as Cyril Power’s famous Vorticist-inspired linocut The Tube Station, Bridget Riley’s Untitled (Fragment 3), printed on the then futuristic material plexiglass, and Lucian Freud’s wonderful etched portrait of his greyhound Eli.
