Sale Overview
The London Print Department are inviting consignments for our next auction of Prints and Multiples which runs from 13-27 March.
Amongst the early highlights are Pablo Picasso’s Minotaure caressant une dormeuse, and Minotaure aveugle guidé par une fillette dans la nuit, from the collection of the Late Paula Rego. Two of the most celebrated images from the famous cycle of etchings La Suite Vollard, each depicts the mythical figure of the Minotaur, an alter-ego for the artist, and the figure of Marie-Thérèse Walter, the artist’s lover and mother of Maya. In the first she is depicted as a sleeper, the subject of the Minotaur’s intense devotion, and in the second as a girl with a dove, leading the now blind Minotaur tenderly by the hand, against the backdrop of a star bedecked night sky. The two works were deeply significant to Paula Rego herself, and suggest a fascinating dialogue with her own extensive exploration of printmaking, especially etching. Other important collections include a selection of lithographs by Marc Chagall, formerly from the Artist’s Estate. Current consignments of Pop Art include four Reigning Queens by Andy Warhol, and Keith Haring’s Apocalypse, the set of ten screenprints with accompanying text by the beat poet William S. Burroughs.
