Sale Overview
Christie’s Russian Art sale offers a curated selection of paintings and works of art, chiefly sourced from private collections and covering over four centuries of art history. The paintings session is led by an early Cubo-Futurist view of Tiflis, Georgia, by one of the exponents of the Russian Avant-Garde, Vera Rockline, and Peasant Girl by Abram Arkhipov, a canvas masterfully rendered in broad and vivid impressionistic brushstrokes. The essence of Russia’s austere yet enchanting nature is captured in the proffered lyrical landscapes of Isaac Levitan and Fedor Vasiliev. Paying tribute to the acclaimed Ballets Russes, the sale offers a striking costume design by Léon Bakst for the opera Sadko, an emotive portrait of the ballerina Olga Morozova by Alexandre Iacovleff and Mikhail Larionov’s expressive depiction of one of the most influential composers of the 20th century, Igor Stravinsky. The Nonconformists section features an elaborate assemblage by Dmitry Plavinsky, inspired by the concertos of Antonio Vivaldi, and Leonid Purygin’s naïve and surreal composition General.
The Russian works of art category is led by an outstanding private French collection of works by Fabergé and his contemporaries, militaria, porcelain and silver. Assembled over 40 years, this collection offers a variety of exceptional works never before seen on the market. The auction also features a group of rare Soviet porcelain plates with exceptional private provenance, and an impressive selection of Russian enamels.
