First edition of this immensely popular history of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Antonio de Solís y Ribadeneyra was a dramatist in the Spanish Baroque tradition. After being named chronicler of the Indies, he published his classic account of the fall of Tenochtitlan which was translated and reprinted into the eighteenth century. Sabin 86446.

Folio (285 x 200mm). Engraved additional title, title with ornamental border, woodcut initials and ornaments (repaired tears sometimes affecting text, some margins reinforced). Contemporary sheep (joints near bottom endcap repaired, wear to extremities). Provenance: R. Felner (printed book label).
