Sale Overview

Christie’s presents Tendrement Vôtre, our online auction of letters and manuscripts signed by the great French authors of the 19th and 20th centuries. From Hugo, Chateaubriand and Musset to Dumas, Flaubert and Proust, the autograph letters and documents summarise the big ideas of these literary giants, offering us an insight into their most intimate thoughts and emotions.

Proust expresses his condolences to Nahmias for the loss of his friends on the frontline, while Flaubert marvels at the ancient ruins of Athens. Musset laments that he is no longer madly in love, and Pierre Louÿs complains about the incompetent doctors ‘in 1900!’ Léon Bloy lashes out at those who conspire against him, while Alphonse Allais sneers at the ‘childishness’ of Rodolphe Salis who is bitter about handing over the directorship of Le Chat Noir journal.
