This composition is clearly inspired by another portrait of Margarita Teresa by an unidentified Spanish hand, now in the Kunsthistoriches Museum, Vienna (inv. no. 8147).
"The first painting Apfel ever bought—a portrait of the Infanta Margarita she picked up 60 years ago at an antiques shop in Florence." (Vail, 2016)

The canvas has a glue lining and is uneven on its keyed stretcher. The buckling is most apparent over the upper left and right corners. There is a fine craquelure across the surface. The surface is dirty and the varnish is slightly cloudy. In natural light restorations to the sitter's neck and small pinpoint restorations in her face have discolored with age. Dots of a white substance are visible at lower right. Small pinpoint losses are visible here and there along the craquelure. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed a few areas of restoration in the dark background. The painting can be displayed in its current state.
