Le tableau est peint sur une toile ayant fait l’objet d’un rentoilage ayant pu aplatir la matière par endroits (cape rouge du modèle et paysage). Le tableau est sur un châssis rapporté à clés. Le tout est stable.
A l’œil nu, on le modèle se présente dans un bel état, les précédentes campagnes de restauration ayant viré étant principalement visibles dans le ciel (à gauche du personnage, le long du bord droit et dans le coin supérieur droit) et dans sa cape rouge.
A l’UV, le tableau se présente sous un vernis opaque uniforme confirmant les observations susmentionnées. L’examen révèle au moins deux campagnes de restauration dans le coin inférieur gauche et le long du bord droit dans le paysage. On constate également que les cheveux du modèle ont été rehaussés et que son visage et son bras gauche ont fait l’objet d’une restauration dans les tons foncés. Son opacité ne permet néanmoins pas de constater d’éventuelles campagnes de restauration antérieures.
La matière reste stable.
Dans un cadre en bois doré, de style à la Bérain (approx. 104 x 92,5 x 9 cm).

The canvas has been subject to relining, which may have flattened the more impasted paint in places (notably the model's red cape and the landscape). The painting is on a keyed stretcher. The whole is stable.
In natural light the painting presents very well. There are some historic, discoloured retouchings visible in the sky (to the left of the figure, along the right edge and in the upper right corner) and in his red cape.
Examination under UV light confirms the above, it further reveals at least two restoration campaigns in the lower left-hand corner and along the right-hand edge in the landscape. There has been some strengthening in the sitter's hair, and there has been some retouching in the dark tones of the arm and face. The opaque varnish precludes a more in depth examination. The paint remains stable.
In a giltwood Bérain style frame (approx. 104 x 92.5 x 9 cm).
