A painter of European high society and aristocracy, Laszlo (1869-1937) immortalised the features of the social elite of the fading European empires and kingdoms from the end of the 19th century to the interwar period. The list of crowned heads who were captured by his graceful, spontaneous touch is long; it includes a posthumous portrait of Elisabeth (Sissi) of Austria (1837-1898) (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum, Budapest, inv. 1865), the Hellenic King Constantine I of Greece (1868-1923) (private collection), George VI of England (1895-1952) (private collection), sketched in 1931, and his daughter, the future Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022), painted two years later at the age of seven (private collection). In 1928, he painted two portraits for the Savoy family, one full-length, depicting the last King of Italy in the sixteenth-century dress(private collection), and the present painting, which shows him in contemporary dress, in a waistcoat with braids, governor's sword in hand.

The reign of Umberto II of Savoy was short-lived; he was removed from power in June 1946 following a referendum in which Italians were asked to choose between prolonging the monarchy or opting for the Republic. The referendum was initiated by King Umberto II, who was well aware of the difficult years Italy had gone through during the Second World War and was looking for new impetus. Although he had little time to shine as sovereign (less than a month), his few decisions demonstrated the understanding of his people and the need to repair a country that had been torn apart. Before giving up his throne, he appointed Ferruccio Parri (1889-1981), a former leader of the Italian Resistance, as Prime Minister.

Peintre de la haute société et de l’aristocratie européenne, Laszlo (1869-1937) a immortalisé les traits de l’élite sociale des derniers empires et royaumes européens de la fin du XIXe siècle à l’entre-deux guerre.
La liste des têtes couronnées à qui il offrit sa touche spontanée si caractéristique est longue et comprend notamment un portrait posthume d’Élisabeth (Sissi) d’Autriche (1837-1898) (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum, Budapest, no. inv. 1865), du roi des Hellènes Constantin Ier de Grèce (1868-1923) (collection particulière), de Georges VI d’Angleterre (1895-1952) (collection particulière) esquissé en 1931 ainsi que sa fille, la future reine Elizabeth II (1926-2022) peinte deux ans plus tard à l’âge de sept ans (collection particulière).
En 1928, c’est au service de la famille de Savoie qu’il réalise deux portraits, l’un en pied représentant le dernier roi d’Italie dans le costume du XVIe siècle porté par son ancêtre (collection particulière) et le nôtre, en habit contemporain, représentant le jeune aristocrate dans un gilet à galons, épée de gouverneur à la main.
Roi très éphémère du royaume d’Italie, Umberto de Savoie descendait d’une maison millénaire, écartée du pouvoir par le référendum de juin 1946 soumettant aux Italiens la possibilité de prolonger la monarchie ou d’opter pour la République. Le référendum était à l’initiative du roi Umberto II, bien conscient des années difficiles traversées par l’Italie pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et en quête d’un nouvel élan. S’il eut que peu de temps pour s’illustrer en tant que souverain (moins d’un mois), ses quelques décisions prouvèrent la compréhension de son peuple et le besoin de réparer un pays déchiré. Avant de quitter le trône, il avait notamment nommé comme premier ministre Ferruccio Parri (1889-1981), ancien chef de la résistance italienne.
