The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Close examination of this painting confirms it to be in a good state of preservation beneath an aged varnish.
The canvas has been relatively recently relined, maintains a good tension and remains structurally stable. Close examination confirms the integrity of the artist’s painterly technique to be generally well preserved, particularly in the sculptural qualities of the modelling and in the subtleties of gradation of colour. There appears to be some restoration near the edges. Ultra-violet fluorescence examination confirms the presence of a thick varnish and scattered retouching, the varnish might be impairing some restoration which is not clearly readable.
