Lot Essay

The recipient of this painting is Zheng Defen (1902-1985), the former CEO of Hong Kong’s Kung Sheung Daily News. Mr Zheng was a committed collector of painting and calligraphy, with close relationships to major artists of the period. Zhang Daqian, Huang Binhong, and Deng Erya all dedicated works to him. In 1940 Zeng contributed to and helped organise two major exhibitions held in Hong Kong: The Exhibition of Guandong Antiquities, and The Exhibition of Classical Chinese Antiquities. Zhang Daqian also gave Zheng’s studio the name: “Studio of Superfluous Learning (Yuxue Zhai)”.
