Devant l'échec de leur quête de financements, les protagonistes du projet Dune se rendent à l'évidence : le film ne sera jamais tourné. Après tant d'investissement et un tel bouillonnement créatif, la désillusion est amère et cruelle. Cependant, le projet a beaucoup fait parler de lui, et le storyboard a manifestement été feuilleté et étudié avec attention.
Nombre d'artistes sont ainsi approchés pour participer à d'autres projets. Dan O'Bannon, responsable des effets spéciaux sur Dune, planche sur ce qui deviendra Alien. O'Bannon souhaite conserver la même équipe créative : fin 1976, il recrute ainsi H.R. Giger, qui sera à l'origine du design de la créature éponyme, Moebius, et Chris Foss.
Pour le Leviathan, qui était la première version du Nostromo, vaisseau spatial et principal théâtre de l'action, Foss se fonde sur des dessins réalisés pour Dune. Au bout de quelques mois, la production se déplace de Los Angeles au Royaume Uni, et Ridley Scott est nommé réalisateur. Les incessantes modifications de script et les consignes parfois contradictoires limitent les avancées.Ron Cobb, qui lui aussi était chargé de dessiner des vaisseaux et véhicules, se souvient : "le responsable des effets spéciaux était sous une pression constante pour construire les grandes maquettes du Nostromo. Un soir, il se rendit dans le département déserté par les autres artistes, et laissant libre cours à sa frustration, décrocha du mur tous les originaux de Chris Foss et les emporta avec lui au studio, pour pouvoir choisir celui qui servirait de base à la maquette". Et Foss de conclure : "le vaisseau tel qu'il est montré dans le film est un amalgame de plusieurs idées, construit de bric et de broc. Il ne rend pas justice aux jours, aux semaines, aux mois de travail que nous avons tous consacré à ce film".

Failing to spark the interest of American producers, the protagonists of the Dune project realized the harsh truth : the movie was not going to be shot. One thing is nonetheless certain : the storyboard was well-studied in Hollywood.
Many artists from the Dune group were invited to work on other projects. Dan O'Bannon, in charge of special effects, started working on a very early stage of the production of a movie, to be later known as Alien. He wanted to keep the same creative team : in late 1976, he reunited the “spiritual warriors” Giger (who designed the eponymous creature), Moebius, and Chris Foss.
For the Leviathan, an early name for the Nostromo, the main ship and location of the movie, Foss reused drawings made for Dune, and tried several colour configurations. After a few months of work, production moved back to the UK, and Ridley Scott was appointed director.
Ron Cobb, who was also in charge of vehicles and spaceships, remembers that “the special effects supervisor under pressure to build the large Nostromo model, went into the deserted art department and, out of frustration, grabbed all the Chris Foss designs off the wall and took them to Bray Studios. There he would choose the design himself in order to have enough time to build the damn thing”. And Chris Foss to conclude : “Finally what happened was that the bloke who had to make the [Nostromo] model completely lost his rag, scooped up a load of paper -they had a room full of smashed-up bits of helicopter and all-sorts- and he just bodged something together. So the actual spaceship in the film hadn’t anything to do with all the days, weeks, months of work that we’d all done. It’s as simple as that.”
