FURTHER DETAILS
ENGLISH SCHOOL 16th CENTURY, FOLLOWER OF GEORGE GOWER, PORTRAIT OF ELIZABETH I (1533-1604), QUEEN OF ENGLAND AND IRELAND, THREE QUARTER LENGTH, OIL ON PANEL

This elegant portrait follows the model of those painted by the Serjeant painter George Gower (1540-1596), one of the leading artists of the Elizabethan court. The majesty and power of Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1604) are fully embodied, as in the famous ‘Armada’ type, a version of which is held by the National Portrait Gallery, London (inv. no. NPG 541): the immaculate, impassive face of the queen is shown surrounded by her royal regalia, against a background depicting the defeat of the Invincible Armada (1588). This type of portrait goes beyond the mere desire to capture a likeness: they are vectors of royal propaganda, designed to shape the image of Elizabeth I as Gloriana, the victorious queen embodying authority, stability and imperial glory.
