Le tableau a fait l'objet d'un rentoilage ancien qui a pu aplatir la matière picturale par endroits (fonds et costume). Le support est stable.

A l'œil nu, on constate un réseau de craquelures sur l'ensemble de la composition ayant fait l'objet de campagnes de stabilisation par endroits. On constate entre autres une zone de restauration associée à un manque dans la partie supérieure du tableau, au-dessus de la tête du modèle. Une autre zone de restauration, prenant la forme d'une ligne, peut-être liée à une ancienne marque de châssis, est visible le long du bord gauche. Le tableau se présente sous un vernis jaunâtre qui bénéficierait d'un nettoyage.

A l'UV, le tableau apparaît sous un vernis opaque uniforme ne permettant pas d'identifier distinctement les différentes campagnes de restauration. On devine néanmoins d'anciennes campagnes de restauration sous la couche de vernis dans les fonds, le long du bord gauche (susmentionné) et dans le costume du modèle.

D'une manière générale, les détails du modèle et de son chien sont bien préservés. La matière reste stable.

The painting has been subject to relining, it is held under tension and remains stable. The relining process has flattened the more impasted areas of the composition, notably in the background and the costume.

Examination in natural light shows a fine network of craquelure over the paint surface, which has been stabilised in areas. Above the sitter’s head there is a small area of restoration associated with a minor loss. Along the left hand edge there is a thin line of retouching, likely associated with an old stretcher bar mark. The varnish has yellowed and would benefit from cleaning.

Examination under UV light is precluded by the aforementioned varnish. However, some historic retouching can be seen in the background and the costume.

Overall the painting presents well, with the detail of the sitter and his dog well preserved. The paint remains stable.
