The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

This large canvas is supported on the reverse with a glue lining. The paint layer is stable under a varnish that has yellowed slightly with age. There is a fine craquelure across the surface. In raking light a campaign of restoration employing fine parallels lines, these are especially visible in the dark contours of the sitters coat and forehead, the draped background, the crown and pillow, and over an area of the sky at upper left. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed further restorations scattered throughout. The painting presents well and is offered in a simple giltwood frame.
