The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
We are grateful to Henry Gentle for providing the following condition report (written communication 24 November 2022).
The painting is lined and there is good adhesion between the original canvas and the lining fabric. The paint layer is stable and secure and well preserved particularly through most of the buildings and the figures, crisp details are retained. The coarse nature of the canvas is visible through the thinly applied paint in the sky, which has become more transparent over time. The warm ground colour has become over exposed and insensitive and excessive mitigation of these areas has been undertaken and is visible under U-V light. Similarly, thinness to the paint in the water has been strengthened and the façade of the building, second from the left. A 1cm loss to the centre of the sky above the roof line has been addressed, along with further minor loss in the sky and consolidation of the edges. The textured paint to the highlights of the buildings and through the folds of the drapery are well preserved. Removal of a discoloured varnish would enhance the preserved tonal and chromatic values. The painting would respond well to careful restoration.
