This canvas is unlined, and slightly slack, although stable on its support. A number of patches are visible on the reverse correspond repairs visible in raking light. There is the stencil of the art supplies dealer Ange Ottoz (1825-1868) on the reverse. The paint layer is stable and maintains a beautiful inpasto in the gold parts of the crest. There is a network of craqueleure across the surface, along which are minor losses. Some of these losses, especially in the gold, have been repaired. These restorations are visible in natural light. Restoration to a 5 inch long tear at upper right, and to a few scattered punctures in the canvas, are also visible in natural light and in the catalogue image. A second tear at left, measuring 6 1/4 inches has also been delicately restored. Further restorations to the shadows in the white areas of fur and other dark areas fluoresce in unltraviolet light. Further inspection under ultraviolet light is hindered by an opaque varnish. The work presents well and is offered unframed.
