The painting is executed on a panel comprised of a single board of vertical grain. It is supported by a cradle on the reverse. There are two repairs to the reverse, one at the upper left corner and the other at the lower edge right of center. There is a small circular depression at the child's ribcage, below the Virgin's proper right index finger. A fine vertical repaired crack extending from the lower edge left of center and measuring about 12 inches long is evident. The paint layer is stable under a slightly yellowed varnish. There is fine craquelure over the surface that follows the vertical grain of the wood. Under natural light, restoration along the upper right edge and to the upper left corner from previous frame abrasion are evident. Pinpoints of restoration to the flesh tones, to the Virgin's red robes, and to the aforementioned depression are visible. Under ultraviolet light, the aforementioned restorations and feathered strokes of inpainting to the craquelure are evident. The painting can be hung in its present state. The work is offered in a simple gilt wood frame.
