Lot Essay

This picture is after Holbein’s portrait of Cromwell, dated to 1532-34, in the Frick Collection, New York. The portrait dates to a key period in Cromwell’s career, when he rose to be the most powerful and influential figure at King Henry VIII’s court. Cromwell was appointed Master of the Jewel House in 1532, Chancellor of the Exchequer the following year, and confirmed as the King’s principal secretary and chief minister in April 1534.
