Sale Overview
Our March online Prints & Multiples sale in London focuses on editions by leading 20th century Modern Masters.
As part of the auction, we are delighted to offer works by icons of 20th-century printmaking from a distinguished private collection, including the top lot of the sale, Pablo Picasso’s Buste de femme d'après Cranach le Jeune, a masterpiece of the linocut technique and a rare example surviving with fresh and vibrant colours. Further highlights from the collection include Henri Matisse’s large format lithograph Grande Odalisque à culotte bayadère, and a grouping of sought-after etchings by Lucien Freud including Eli, Pluto and Garden in Winter. Two rare impressions from La Suite des Saltimbanques taken before steel-facing, Salomé and Le Bain, show the subjects printed with great detail and rich burr. From the same collection is Picasso’s tour de force La femme au tambourin conceived in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II, which will be offered in the 20th/21st Century Art Evening Auction on 28 February in London.
Andy Warhol’s Goethe and Muhammed Ali sets along with Marilyn (black version) lead the Pop Art section, which also includes the artist’s celebrated portraits of Queen Elizabeth and Mick Jagger, as well as Keith Haring’s whimsical homage to the King of Pop, Andy Mouse.
A selection of prints by Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson from the John and Gilda McGarry collection is led by The Road from Arras to Bapaume, one of the finest images Nevinson produced as an official war artist on the Western Front, which has been described as ‘a powerful and enduring anti-war image’.
With exceptional prices fetched for prints and multiples at Christie’s in 2022, if you would like further specialist details on all the works in sale please contact Alexandra Gill at agill@christies.com.
