Provenance
Collection particulière, Paris.
FURTHER DETAILS
FRENCH SCHOOL 17th CENTURY, FOLLOWER OF RAPHAEL, SAINT MICHAEL VANQUISHING SATAN, OIL ON CANVAS

Painted by Raphael (1483-1520) in 1518, Saint Michael vanquishing Satan was first hung in Fontainebleau, then in the King's Cabinet in the Louvre, in the Tuileries and in the King's Chamber in Versailles before it was returned to the walls of the Louvre (Paris, inv. no. 610).
This prestigious royal provenance explains the great fortune that the painting enjoyed in French artistic circles in the 17th Century. In addition to the present work, we know of another important copy of the work, which is preserved in the church of Saint-Alpin in Châlons-sur-Marne, a building that was classified as a Monument Historique in 1911.

Lot Essay
